Croup is a respiratory condition commonly affecting young children, characterized by inflammation of the upper airways, including the larynx and trachea.

It typically causes a distinctive “barking” cough, hoarseness, and difficulty breathing, often accompanied by a noisy, high-pitched sound when inhaling (stridor). Croup is usually caused by viral infections, most commonly the parainfluenza virus, and tends to worsen at night.

Treatment often focuses on easing symptoms, such as using humidified air or medications like steroids to reduce airway inflammation.
